Braces
Patients with traditional braces should follow these general hygiene rules.
Foods to avoid
No hard foods such as:
- ice
- brittle
- hard candies like jawbreakers
- popcorn
- Cracker Jack
- peanuts
- M&M with peanuts
- ribs on the bone
- corn on the cob
No sticky foods such as:
- Airheads
- Ju Ju bees
- jelly beans
- Snickers
- caramels
- taffy
- Slow Pokes

- Now & Laters
What about 'hard' foods?
Hard fruits and vegetables must be sliced into small pieces. No break-open hard bread rolls, etc.
Absolutely no chewing gum.
Chewing gum, including sugarless gum, can loosen cement underneath the bands.
Do not chew on pens and pencils or bite fingernails.
Tooth Soreness
Sometimes after the braces have been adjusted there may be a few days where the teeth may be sore.
Take Tylenol® or Ibuprofen (Advil®) as long as no drug allergy exists. Take as directed by manufacturer. Call if discomfort persists or worsens.
