Does cosmetic dentistry have the same long-term benefits that orthodontics has?

February 18th, 2009 posted by admin

Is a fast dental makeover better than a slow one?

No. Although the treatment time is usually shorter with cosmetic dentistry, the overall result cannot substitute the benefits of orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatment will straighten the teeth, improve facial profiles and correct a bite that can cause tooth damage later. All of these advantages cannot be done to the same extent with only cosmetic procedures.

While veneers and bonding to original dentition is fast, it is not durable enough to last a lifetime. The significant long-term maintenance is often more expensive in the end than orthodontics. Orthodontics can also prevent aggressive cosmetic procedures that may alter healthy enamel.

In some cases, such as the placement of implants, cosmetic dentistry cannot be completed until the patient has had orthodontic treatment.

So while cosmetic dentistry may be more appealing to patients, the life-long benefits of orthodontics saves time, expenses and helps to avoid unnecessary dental procedures in the future.
