X-rays gather information about your child’s condition that I cannot see with a visual clinical evaluation. For example, it shows me what is happening with the placement and development of teeth that have and have not come in, and the relationship of teeth to bone and gum tissue. X-rays can also help find diseases of the jaw and/or other abnormalities like missing teeth, extra teeth or any atypical circumstances during treatment. Only through x-ray images can I know the precise placement of teeth. This aids in my diagnosis and treatment planning so that I can deliver the best possible results for your child.

Here are steps I take to ensure the safety of all my patients:

I ONLY order dental X-rays for patients when it is necessary for diagnosis and treatment.

I provide my staff with in-office training at the time of installation.

I also provide my staff with additional in-office training for any updates applied to the equipment.

We take digital 2D scans, because it has a lower radiation dose than 3D scans.

My office uses computer controls which help to insure the lowest dose possible for obtaining the information needed for diagnosis and treatment planning too.

Lastly, I have all machines evaluated on a regular basis by x-ray technicians to assure the radiation dosages are correct and that there is minimal risk of exposure to other areas.

For additional resources regarding digital x-rays, I highly recommend visiting:

www.ada.org
The safety and comfort of my patients is extremely important to me and my staff. If you are ever concerned with a procedure, please let us know.
Thank You,

Dr. Mike

A lot of my patients ask me whether or not an electric toothbrush cleans better than a manual one. Even though there is some research data claiming modern electric toothbrushes can clean better than the manual ones, my opinion regarding brushing is that most people run into issues because of improper brushing techniques and/or not brushing long enough.

However, if the brusher enjoys brushing better with an electric toothbrush and brushes with it more carefully, more often, or for the proper amount of time (which is often times the case for my younger brushers), it can significantly improve oral hygiene. Only minimal skill is needed to brush properly with an electric brush, while a manual toothbrush requires dexterity and diligence. The smaller brush head of an electric toothbrush also makes it easier to reach all areas of the mouth, even the back teeth. In addition to being less likely to cause damage to tooth enamel and gums, electric brushes also require less brushing force to provide effective dental plaque removal. Finally, an electric toothbrush tends to be more effective for my patients in active treatment since it reaches crevices between braces and teeth that are not easily cleaned.

In recent years, even the premium power toothbrushes have become affordable. I recommend the Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 with SmartGuide Electric Toothbrush. It is Oral-B’s most technologically advanced toothbrush. A few of my favorite features are the easy to read timer, the pressure sensor, and the wireless SmartGuide. Please visit www.oralb.com to find out more about this great product, or stop by our office where we sell the Oral-B Smart Series 5000 Toothbrush for only $110.00*.

In conclusion, whether you choose an electric toothbrush or a manual toothbrush, what’s most important is daily brushing and flossing properly.

Dr. Mike

*This product normally sells for $160.00 in retail stores.

April is National Facial Protection Month, and I would like to remind all of my patients just how important it is to wear moth guards in order to prevent recreation-related mouth and face injuries. In case you didn’t know, 1/3 of dental injuries are related to sports activities. Wearing a mouth guard makes absolute sense in sports such as football-which I’m sure you know- but it can also provide protection in other sports such as gymnastics and baseball. In a survey commissioned by the AAO, 67 percent of parents admitted that their children do not wear mouth guards during organized sports. Last year, the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation predicted that more than 3 million teeth would be knocked out in youth sporting events!

The bottom line, which I cannot stress enough, is to wear a mouth guard that fits well and does not impair breathing. Also, constantly be on the lookout for telltale signs of wear, which means decreased effectiveness. Children should replace their mouth guards yearly, sometimes more often, as their dentition changes.

To learn more about getting your child a free multi-sport mouth guard, or to schedule your next appointment, please call us at:
Gurnee: (847) 249-8800
Kenosha: (262) 637-8800

Valuable materials from the AAO can be found at www.aao.org as well. The AAO “Bubble Wrap” video, which uses humor to address the serious issue of oral injuries during sports and the importance of using mouth guards, can be watched at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mMTTXbdwT4&feature=g-upl&context=G258365bAUAAAAAAAAAA. I highly recommend that you take a few minutes of your time to enjoy and educate yourself about facial protection. Please pass this information on to other patients, parents, coaches, and athletes too.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mike

April Showers Bring Great Offers

Have you heard? Here at Prairie Orthodontics we provide quality orthodontics for
both children and adults. That includes a free orthodontic consultation,
a variety of treatment options, flexible payment plans, free insurance
verification, and after work/school appointments.

Come rain or shine we also offer numerous programs that can
help reduce the cost of treatment. For example, our sibling program can save
you $300.00 or more! Love Prairie Orthodontics? Well then our 50/50 program is
perfect for you. If you refer a friend, and that friend starts treatment with
us, you would both get $50.00 off your bill! There are no limits to how
many referrals you can make either! Ask our office staff for additional
details.

Thank you to those Prairie patients who have already referred friends and family to
our office. A referral is one of the best ways of giving us a compliment.

Spring Cleaning Includes Your Teeth

With spring here, a fresh start with dental care is timely. If you are making plans
for spring cleaning around the house, why not start in the bathroom and help
floss your child’s teeth and gums? Proper flossing removes the food particles,
plaque and bacteria between your child’s teeth and gums that their toothbrush
can’t reach. This helps to keep your child’s teeth healthy and their breath
fresher.

It’s not enough simply to buy dental care products for your child; consistent and
frequent use and supervision is critical for success. Ask our office staff
about using super floss, or proxy brushes, at your child’s next visit.

Protection Against the Weather

Okay, so it can’t really protect you from our unpredictable weather, but
fluoride dental rinse can help you prevent cavities and white spots on your
teeth. We are currently running a special too. Buy one bottle for $12.00, or
buy four bottles for only $32.00! The rinse also comes in three great flavors:
mint, bubblegum, and grape. If you choose the four bottles special, you are
more than welcome to mix and match the flavors too.
