Join us for our 12th Annual Patient Appreciation Day at the Movies!

Join Dr. Mike and Staff for Cats and Dogs 3D On Friday August 6th at Gurnee Marcus Cinema!

Doors Open at 10:00 a.m.

All patients of Prairie Orthodontics are welcome as Dr. Mike’s guest with one free guest.

Additional guests are welcome at a cost of $10.

Snacks and drinks will be provided.

An Ortho Assistant, Diane also takes care of ordering clinical supplies. She’s been in this business for more than 10 years. Diane grew up on the southside of Chicago, but moved to Lake County in 1991. She has two sisters and a cat named “Trouble,” who is more lovingly referred to as “Boog.” Diane leads a pretty busy life working much of the week with Dr. Mike and the other working at a local radio station. When she has time off, Diane likes to work out and spend time with her friends.

Rochel has been working three years as a Clinical Assistant. She currently lives in Lake County with her pet ferret, Chili. Rochel has two brothers and one sister. She enjoys the movies, trips to the city and decorating cakes.

Robyn has worked as an Ortho Assistant for the last four years. Originally from Round Lake Beach, she currently lives in Spring Grove. Robyn and her husband, Marc, have raised three girls and love to visit with their grandson. When she’s not at work, Robyn enjoys gardening and bike-riding.

Danielle works along with Dr. Mike welcoming all new patients. She is your “go-to” person on treatment options, orthodontics counseling, filing insurance claims and scheduling appointments. She has worked nine years in dentistry and graduated from College of Lake County with a business management degree in 2007. She married in June 2008 and currently lives in Antioch, with her husband, a cat named “Princess” and a Serbian husky named “Sakari.” She loves spending time with family and friends, working in the garden and traveling with her husband.

Laurie has been in orthodontics for 13 years and has been working with Dr. Mike as an assistant since 2002. Raised in Chicago, Laurie and her family now live in Lake County. She enjoys her life as a wife, mom and caregiver to two aging pooches, one a beagle and the other a pointer. Her passions include running, cooking and window shopping.

Dr. Mike is originally from Long Island, NY, and is the youngest of four siblings. He began his studies at The School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and eventually moved to the area to finish his Orthodontic studies at the University of Illinois-Chicago. He also attended the University of Michigan, where among other things, Dr. Mike played trombone in the marching band. He now lives in Highland Park with his son, Scott, and daughter, Lauren. An adoring father, Dr. Mike loves to attend his kids’ sporting events. He also likes traveling and seeing Independent Film Festivals, playing tennis and working out.

I want to get an oral piercing. Will that affect my treatment or oral health?

A fractured tooth, a possible complication of a tongue piercing and trauma.

While a tongue or lip ring may seem fun and harmless, there are complications that you should be aware of before getting one. Common immediate problems one may have are swelling, prolonged bleeding and infection. All are serious complications and would need medical attention. More long term issues include nerve damage, plaque buildup and damage to teeth (fractures) and gums (recession). Having a piercing during orthodontic treatment can be even more hazardous, leading to broken brackets and added irritation and discomfort.

While the best way to prevent all of this is to avoid oral piercings, if you do decide to get one, schedule an appointment with your dentist. They will be able to help you keep the area clean and may notice serious issues before you do, decreasing the risk of permanent damage.

Dr. Mike is now available on both Myspace and Facebook. Both sites are being used to update patients on current events in the office. Dr. Mike and the Prairie Ortho staff will also be using the sites to host games and activities for all patients who are “friends” on the sites.
